Lawn Aeration FAQ

Not sure what lawn aeration is? Not sure if your lawn needs to be aerated? Let’s start with the basics:

How does my lawn become compacted?

Your lawn will start to become compacted overtime from children playing, outdoor gatherings, dogs, activities outside, cars being parked on the lawn or any heavy equipment on your lawn over a certain period of time. As your soil compacts, it will cause the air flow to the roots of your grass to become restricted. With lack of air, your lawn will start to deteriorate and will take longer to bring back to a healthy state.

What is thatch?

Thatch is the buildup of roots, dead grass, and organic debris. This buildup creates a layer between the grass and soil that makes it difficult for essential nutrients (like water, air, and fertilizer) to reach the soil and feed the roots.

What is core aeration?

Core aeration is the process of removing small plugs of thatch and soil from your grass, creating pathways for water and air to reach the root system. This process is more complex than it sounds. Timing needs to be carefully determined to ensure easy lawn recovery and promote healthy growth.

When should I aerate my lawn?

We recommend annual lawn aeration for most lawns. The best time of year to aerate your lawn is early spring – your lawn will heal faster and it will allow your grass to thrive during the growing season. For lawns with compacted soil, we may recommend two aeration appointments per year. We’ll come in the spring as well as early fall to aerate your lawn.

Can I dethatch my own yard?

You can find DIY dethatching equipment in home improvement stores and dethatching tips from several online sources. However, hiring a professional is always recommended. Aerating and dethatching your yard can cause harm if done improperly or at the wrong time of year. Our lawn care specialists have the expertise to develop an effective dethatching plan and schedule for your yard.
